Clear Spanish grammar
Hay vs estar: existence or location in Spanish
Hay introduces the existence or quantity of something. Estar tells us where a person or thing that is already identified is located.
The essentials
Three rules that clear up the confusion
- 1
Hay is invariable in the present tense and often appears with an indefinite noun or a number.
- 2
Estar agrees with its subject and normally locates a definite or already known entity.
- 3
Do not normally combine hay with a definite article: introduce un libro, then locate el libro.
